Cuckoo Maran
The Cuckoo Maran is a charming and productive heritage breed known for its attractive barred plumage and rich, deep brown eggs. With their signature cuckoo-patterned feathers—similar to a lighter Barred Rock—Cuckoo Marans bring both beauty and utility to backyard flocks.
Hens typically lay 180–220 large brown eggs per year, often with a darker, more chocolate tint than standard brown egg layers. Their eggs may vary in shade throughout the year but are consistently rich in color and highly sought after. Cuckoo Marans are also valued for their gentle, friendly temperament, making them a great choice for families and mixed flocks.
These birds are hardy and adaptable, performing well in a variety of climates. They are good foragers, moderate in activity level, and handle confinement or free-range setups equally well. Calm, easy to keep, and visually appealing, the Cuckoo Maran is an excellent addition to any backyard flock.
